これまでフランス留学・旅の経験や、現地から取り寄せた材料をメインに、風景や建築をテーマにした作品を制作してきました。

今回インスピレーションを膨らませたのは、豪華絢爛な「ヴェルサイユ宮殿」です。自身で撮影してきた写真からイメージを絞り込み、コンセプトは「ルイ14世スタイルの額縁」と「アイリスのブローチ」に決定しました。

 

フランス王家を象徴する伝統的な意匠、百合の紋章「フルール・ド・リス（Fleur-de-lis）」。

ルイ14世の時代には、宮殿建築や家具など、さまざまな装飾芸術の中にその姿を見ることができます。

この紋章は直訳すると「百合の花」ですが、その起源は植物学的な百合ではなく、湿地に咲く黄色のアイリス（キショウブ）を図案化したものであるという説が古くから語られてきました。

 

紋章のルーツである「アイリス」と、それが最も華やかに装飾へと昇華された「ルイ14世様式」。

そして、古来より最高位の身分にのみ許された最高貴の色、「紫」。

この要素を現代のアート刺繍によって結びつけ、高貴な紫のジャーマンアイリスを“肖像”として額縁の中に描き出す──。

そんな想いから、今回のモノづくりが始まりました。

11月16日：構想とイメージの可視化

制作の第一歩として、画像や特徴を1枚の紙にとりまとめます。今回はAIの力も借りながら構想を固め、続いて紙を使って3Dアイリスの花弁の型紙を制作しました。

現時点での仮のタイトル“Souvenirs de Versailles : l’Iris et l’Art du Roi Soleil”（ヴェルサイユの想い出：アイリスと太陽王の芸術）です。

　

 

12月7日：花弁の刺繍が終了

ジャーマンアイリス用の花びらを、ようやく刺し終えました。

3mmの小さなスパングルを一枚ずつ重ね、アイリスらしいフリルとした立体感が出るよう、あえて微妙な隙間を作って刺しています。カップ型スパングルならではの、光を受けて静かに反射する瞬間は、いつ見ても心が躍るものです。

 

12月11日〜15日：組み立てと額縁の図案制作

花弁を組み立ててコサージュを仕上げた後、すぐに額縁の図案制作と試作をスタートしました。

1月5日：予期せぬ冷却期間

試作をもとに図案を修正し、飾りモチーフの制作に入った段階で、3月の展示販売イベントへの出展が決まりました。そのため、一度制作をストップすることに。

予定がずれたことで焦る気持ちもありましたが、結果的には作品の仕上がり像を冷静に見つめ直す、良い冷却期間となりました。イベントでのオーダー制作・発送を無事に終え、作業を再開します。

　

 

3月26日：図案の修正と地道な手仕事

ここで、海外からの材料に一部調達できないものが発生し、図案を大幅に修正して刺繍をスタート。同じ作業の繰り返しですが、ここからは地道な針仕事が続きます。

　

 

4月18日：額縁の完成と、背景の検証

額縁の刺繍がほぼ完了し、仕上げに必要な材料の最終決定へ。額縁の背面の質感がなかなか決まらず、サンプルを置きながら何度も検証を重ねました。

 

5月4日：刺繍から「仕立て」の工作へ

5月に入り、作業は刺繍の手を離れ、額縁への仕立て（工作）のフェーズへ。

まだ背面の素材を絞り込めず、ここから数日悩むことになります。

 

5月7日：ついに完成

悩み抜いた末、ようやくすべてのピースが収まり、作品が完成しました。

最終的な題名は、『Portrait d’Iris — アイリスの肖像』。

完成画像は撮影でき次第UPします。

 

【作品説明】

ジャーマンアイリスをモチーフに、まるで一枚の肖像画のような佇まいを目指した立体刺繍作品です。

ルイ14世様式（バロック様式）の重厚な美学に着想を得た額縁は、花そのものを引き立てながら、気品ある空間を演出できるよう意識しました。

ビーズやスパングル、金糸コードなど多様な素材を幾重にも重ね、リュネヴィル・クロシェ刺繍を中心に針刺繍も取り入れながら、木彫や石膏装飾のような奥行きのあるモールディングを表現しています。一針ずつ積み重ねることで生まれる重厚感に、手仕事の魅力を改めて実感することができました。

花弁もすべてリュネヴィル・クロシェ刺繍です。濃紫から淡紫、そして白へと移ろう優雅な色彩が、アイリス特有の奥行きを引き立てます。実物に近づけたサイズ感で、花本来が持つ生命力と存在感を大切に仕立てました。

現代のアート刺繍によって額縁の中に描き出した、アイリスの麗しい姿。

実物の輝きをご覧いただける日を楽しみにしています。

[Creation Record]

Crafting "Portrait of an Iris" Through Art Embroidery

 

Up until now, my work has centered around landscapes and architecture, inspired largely by my experience studying and traveling in France, and using materials sourced directly from there. For my latest piece, I drew inspiration from the grand and opulent Palace of Versailles. Narrowing down ideas from photographs I took myself, I decided on a concept featuring a "Louis XIV-style frame" and an "iris brooch."

The "Fleur-de-lis" (lily) is a traditional motif symbolizing the French monarchy. During the reign of Louis XIV, it could be seen across a wide range of decorative arts, from palace architecture to furniture.

While the term literally translates to "flower of the lily," a long-held theory suggests its botanical origin is actually not a lily at all, but a stylized yellow iris (yellow flag) that grows in wetlands.

The iris—the root of the emblem—and the Louis XIV style, where this motif was sublimated into its most magnificent decorative form.

And "purple," the color of ultimate nobility, reserved since ancient times exclusively for those of the highest rank.

This project began with a desire to weave these elements together through contemporary art embroidery, capturing a noble purple German iris inside a frame as a true "portrait."

 

November 16: Concept and Visualization

As a first step, I gathered images and key features onto a single sheet of paper. This time, I solidified the concept with the help of AI, and then used paper to create templates for the 3D iris petals.

The tentative title at this stage is "Souvenirs de Versailles : l'Iris et l'Art du Roi Soleil" (Memories of Versailles: The Iris and the Art of the Sun King).

 

December 7: Petal Embroidery Completed

I have finally finished embroidering the petals for the German iris.

Layering tiny 3mm spangles one by one, I deliberately left subtle gaps to create the ruffled, three-dimensional volume characteristic of an iris. Seeing the cup-shaped spangles catch the light and softly shimmer never fails to make my heart flutter.

 

December 11–15: Assembly and Frame Design

After assembling the petals to complete the corsage, I immediately jumped into designing and prototyping the frame.

 

January 5: An Unexpected Cooling-Off Period

Just as I was revising the design based on the prototype and starting on the decorative motifs, my participation in a gallery exhibition and sales event for March was confirmed. As a result, I had to put this project on hold.

While I felt a bit anxious about the delay, it ultimately served as a good cooling-off period that allowed me to look at the final vision of the piece with fresh eyes. Having successfully finished and shipped the custom orders from the event, I am now resuming work.

 

March 26: Design Adjustments and Steady Handwork

At this point, some of the materials from overseas became unavailable, forcing me to make major adjustments to the design before starting the embroidery. It is a repetition of the same precise steps, but from here on, the steady, patient needlework begins.

 

April 18: Frame Completed and Background Trials

The embroidery for the frame is almost complete, and I am making final decisions on the finishing materials. I struggled to lock down the texture for the back of the frame, testing it repeatedly with various samples.

 

May 4: From Embroidery to "Tailoring" and Assembly

Entering May, the work shifted away from embroidery and into the tailoring (assembly) phase of the frame.

Still unable to narrow down the material for the background, I would spend the next few days agonizing over the choice.

 

May 7: Finally Complete

After much deliberation, all the pieces have finally fallen into place, and the work is complete.

The final title is "Portrait d’Iris — Portrait of an Iris."

 

[Artwork Description]

This three-dimensional embroidery piece features a German iris motif, designed to evoke the presence of a painted portrait.

Inspired by the heavy, dignified aesthetics of the Louis XIV (Baroque) style, the frame was created to complement the flower while lending an air of elegance to any space. By layering various materials such as beads, spangles, and gold metallic threads, and combining Luneville haute couture embroidery with traditional needle embroidery, I expressed a deep, molded texture reminiscent of wood carvings or plaster ornaments. The sheer weight and depth born from building up each stitch one by one made me fall in love with the charm of handiwork all over again.

The petals are also fully crafted using Luneville embroidery. The graceful color transition shifting from deep purple to pale violet, and finally to white, enhances the unique depth of the iris. Created in a size close to a real flower, the piece honors the natural vitality and presence of the blossom.

The beautiful form of the iris, captured within a frame through modern art embroidery—I look forward to the day you can see its true brilliance in person.
